State stops fining Hattiesburg over wastewater
HATTIESBURG, Miss. (AP) – The City of Hattiesburg has stopped paying fines to the Mississippi Department of Environmental Quality over its wastewater treatment plan.
Local media outlets report the Hattiesburg City Council and Mayor Johnny DuPree received a letter from the department on Wednesday, which explains the city will stop paying $1,500 per day for missing a Sept. 1 deadline to submit a wastewater plan. The letter says Hattiesburg owes $18,000 to the department, and council president Kim Bradley says he’s not sure if the city will have to pay it or if the city will be forgiven.
The letter means the department has approved the city’s wastewater land application system.
Bradley says the city will move forward with the system, but the land the city plans to purchased hasn’t yet been finalized.
