Court records: Woman impaired by drugs in fatal accident

PASCAGOULA, Miss. (AP) – Court records show a Mississippi woman was under the influence of prescription drugs when she swerved into another lane and hit a pickup truck head-on, killing a 4-year-old Louisiana boy and seriously injuring four others.

The Sun Herald reports records show 40-year-old Carissa Dawn McCary, of Hurley, tested positive for benzodiazepines — a class of prescription drugs which includes Xanax and other pain relievers.

A Jackson County grand jury indicted McCary on felony DUI causing the death of 4-year-old Darren Gaspard Jr., of Starks, Louisiana.

In addition, the grand jury indicted McCary on three other counts of felony DUI causing the disfigurement of three others in the Gaspard family, and one count of felony child endangerment resulting in serious injuries to McCary’s teenager.

The accident occurred on Nov. 28, 2012, in Hurley.
