International Blues Challenge rocks Memphis
MEMPHIS, Tenn. — The soul of Tennessee is tied into music. That’s why Memphis is the best place to host the 32nd annual International Blues Challenge.
“We’re expecting many thousands on Beale Street,” said Blues Foundation President and CEO Barbara Newman. “It’s the biggest blues party of Beale for the year.”
Newman said the mission is to expand worldwide awareness of the blues every time they host this competition. During this signature event, all of Beale Street becomes a four-day blues venue with artists from around the world, attracting fans from all over.
“While living in Memphis, you can’t avoid the blues,” German blues fan Brigitte Ebel said. “It’s everywhere. It’s the real thing.”
“A lot of bands in four days,” said Nanny Kajuiter, a blues fan from Finland. “That’s more than you can see in a club or a festival or whatever, from all over the world.”
“Blues — It’s blues,” Von Jose Roberts said. “Everyone loving one another, everyone is telling their story their own way — through music.”
If you’ve never been to the International Blues Challenge or experienced authentic blues music, folks say it’s worth the trip.
“Memphis is the place to be, for sure,” Newman said. “Especially this week. Blues Foundation and the International Blues Challenge — biggest party on Beale Street.”
“It’s the center of the universe for the blues this weekend in Memphis,” Ebel said. “Why wouldn’t you come down here?”
The International Blues Challenge festivities kicked off Tuesday night. Competition begins Wednesday afternoon, and the finals will be held at the Orpheum Theater on Saturday.
There will be more than 250 acts, which is nearly 900 musicians. Passes for the entire week are $100 or you can purchase a one-day wristband at any club.
