State Sen. Brian Kelsey talks education with Jackson Rotary Club

JACKSON, Tenn. — One of Jackson’s oldest civic clubs played host to a West Tennessee state senator Wednesday afternoon.

State Sen. Brian Kelsey talks educationBrian Kelsey, R-Germantown, spoke to the Jackson Rotary Club Wednesday afternoon about education and its progress here in the Volunteer State.

Kelsey emphasized that lawmakers are committed to continuing Tennessee’s improvement in its education systems and that part of that begins with the new TNReady testing that students will take for the first time this year.

“The TNReady test will be more difficult for our students and teachers at the beginning of the year, but I think in the long run it is more important that we have a rigorous curriculum and rigorous testing in place so that we can continue to make gains in the state,” Sen. Kelsey said.

Kelsey, who serves on the education committee, also says he thinks the new test will create an opportunity for students to learn the needed computer skills to be prepared when they enter the workforce.
