Baldwyn Police gear up with body cameras

BALDWYN, Miss. (AP) – The Baldwyn Police Department now has body cameras for each officer to use while on the job.

Police Chief Troy Agnew tells WTVA-TV (http://bit.ly/1SMmf9E) that the body cameras will give officers a new perspective while on patrol, and will hopefully help with officers’ honesty and professionalism.

The department was able to acquire the cameras through special assessments that come through traffic tickets. That enabled department officials to purchase the cameras without the need to use taxpayer dollars.

Assistant Police Chief Paul Simpson says anything the camera captures cannot be edited.

Mayor Michael James says the city is expected to pass an ordinance this week that will hold officers accountable for not having their cameras on during every encounter with the public.
