Parole officer bribery

JACKSON, Miss. (AP) – A former Mississippi parole officer will serve 10 months in prison after pleading guilty to taking bribes from a parolee.

Forty-four-year-old Andra Smith, of Anguilla, was sentenced Thursday by U.S. District Judge Tom Lee. He also must serve two years’ probation and pay $800 in restitution.

Smith faced up to 10 years in prison.

In an October plea, Smith admitted to taking $2,400 from a parolee he was supervising in Madison County during 2015 in exchange for letting the man leave Mississippi to work at a higher paying job offshore.

Smith, who worked nearly nine years as a parole and probation agent, resigned July 19, the day before an administrative hearing was scheduled.

Corrections Commissioner Marshall Fisher said his department received allegations against Smith and referred them to the FBI.
