Officials look at Miss. 18 as a life saver for Jackson
JACKSON, Miss. (AP) – The five-mile stretch of Mississippi 18 that runs through Jackson is sparsely populated with businesses and has limited options for dining.
But efforts are under way to change that.
The Clarion-Ledger reports during a public meeting Tuesday discussing development for Mississippi 18, Mayor Tony Yarber said that the area is one of several corridors that the city is looking to improve to create an economic impact.
Eric Jefferson, director for the Jackson planning and development department, says more than 40 percent of the properties along Highway 18 are vacant.
The underutilized properties near the highway, which has an average daily traffic count of more than 30,000 vehicles per day, according to Jefferson, creates a missed revenue opportunity.
