Crockett Co. school leaders to make decision on resuming classes

CROCKETT COUNTY, Tenn. — School officials plan to decide Friday whether Crockett County High School and Middle School students will return to class Monday.

school-pic.pngDirector of Schools Bobby Mullins said that if students do return Monday they will use the library, cafeteria and theater as classrooms.

School leaders announced Wednesday that the schools would be closed the remainder of the week as they tried to determine the extent of damage left after a tornado struck the town Tuesday evening.

The school district has allotted 13 days for school cancellations including for severe weather, according to Mullins. Three out of those 13 are for professional development days for employees.

The middle and high school have used six days so far. Mullins says they will have a school board meeting at 7 p.m Monday to decide whether they are going to make up a day on Presidents’ Day, Feb. 15.

School officials reported significant damage to buildings in the area of the high school, including extensive roof damage to the vocational building and field house at the football stadium. Mullins said eight to 10 classrooms were affected by the damage.

The National Weather Service confirmed an EF-1 tornado touched down Tuesday in the county. The tornado reportedly had a path about two and a half miles long and 100 yards wide.
