Kids takeover downtown for Mardi Gras parade
JACKSON, Tenn. — Saturday morning, kids in Jackson got to shut down parts of downtown for a Mardi Gras celebration.
Thanks to Jackson Downtown Development Corporation, kids and their parents were able to get a taste of the Big Easy.

“I think its very good for the community,” said Sherel Hunt. “You see people from all walks of life, kids from all ages. Everyone’s enjoying themselves and having a good time.”
Kids were able to make mask and of course collect the cherished Mardi Gras beads. Organizers even crowned a king and queen to lead the parade through downtown.

“I think its something that brings families together and just a fun wholesome event,” said Joice Owens.
“It’s just something fun for them to do,” said Heather Rodgers. “…to keep them out of trouble really. Even though its just for a couple of hours, its still just something for them to do.”
A lot of parents said they have been to the celebration in New Orleans, and said Jackson’s celebration is just as fun.
“We have and how does this compare,” Hunt said. “It’s right up there. It’s very good.”
“Nothing like this by the way,” Owens said. “But this is a lot more fun.”
For those who may not have made it out to Saturday’s Mardi Gras block party, there’s always next year.
“We’ll be out here the same time next year,” Altobell said. “I think anybody that’s here today will tell you you’re missing out.”
