Union City man charged with trying to cash dead man’s check
UNION CITY, Tenn. — Police have charged a Union City man with four felony counts after they say he tried to use a dead man’s identity to cash a check at a local bank.
Eugene Sherman is accused of trying to cash the check Tuesday at First Citizens Bank, according to a report from the Union City Police Department.
Bank employees told police a man later identified as Sherman attempted to cash a check issued to someone else and also presented the person’s driver’s license and Social Security card.
When the teller told Sherman the man the check was issued to would need to provide permission for Sherman to cash the check, Sherman told them the man was in dialysis and could not use the phone.
Another bank employee then confirmed the man had died in October 2015. Sherman then reportedly left the bank, leaving behind the check, driver’s license and Social Security card.
Police later identified Sherman as the suspect, and he reportedly admitted to trying to cash the check along with signing the deceased man’s name on the back. He also admitted to cashing two more of the deceased man’s checks at Wal-Mart in the last two months, according to the report.
Sherman is charged with three counts of forgery and one count of identity theft.
