Local NAACP chapter celebrates Founders Day
JACKSON, Tenn.-The oldest civil rights organization in the nation turned 107 Friday.
The National Association for the Advancement of Colored People celebrated their Founders Day downtown, Friday afternoon.
Community members joined the Jackson-Madison County chapter of the NAACP to honor local heroes who had an active role in the civil rights movement. Honorees were given medals of recognition for there contributions.
“We have had a lot of successes, lot of failures but a lot of successes as well. And today we want to honor those who are here that have contributed so much for this occasion,” said Harrell Carter, President of the Jackson-Madison County Chapter of the NAACP.
Friday’s honorees participated in historic events like the March on Washington and marching with Dr. Martin Luther King in Selma, Alabama.
