Weakley Co. wreck leaves woman dead

WEAKLEY COUNTY, Tenn. — Just before 10 a.m. Sunday, officers responded to an accident along Highway 124 in Weakley County.

“I was just coming home and pulled up to a big line of emergency vehicles,” said neighbor Scott Davis. “I came home and I found a car in the ditch.”

According to the Tennessee Highway Patrol, 24-year-old Brianna Vermillion of McKenzie was found unresponsive after she lost control of her car three miles east of Greenfield. Heading eastbound, THP officials said Vermillion hit a concrete guardrail at a curve and landed in a ditch.

“Nobody could have survived,” Davis said. “It was like smashed, and when they started pulling it up it was like in half.”

The fire department and police worked almost three hours to clear the wreck. Davis said he’s always heard this road was dangerous. Just last week he says he witnessed a crash right across the street.

She flipped her car on the other side,” Davis said. “She walked away. I don’t think she even had a scratch. It’s weird to have that happen one way one day and not quite the next. Sorry for the family. It always sucks to lose anybody.”

Because of the weather, officers said they received a number of assistance calls Sunday. Troopers urge drivers to buckle up and drive cautiously on bridges and overpasses because there may be ice.

THP officials say it is possible icy road conditions were a factor in the morning wreck. Troopers also say the driver was not wearing a seat belt at  the time of the crash.
