Police search for suspects passing counterfeit cash
SAVANNAH, Tenn. — Investigators search for three suspects accused of passing counterfeit cash in West Tennessee. They are now putting out a warning to residents so they don’t become the next victims.
Savannah Police said at least four stores received multiple $10 bills between Sunday and Monday that store clerks quickly found out were fake. For Candy Holmes at KM Market, she knew something was not right, right away.
“A man handed me the $10 bill, he was getting some beer and I checked it,” Holmes said. “I showed the manager that it turned brown during the test and then we called the police.”
Three suspects, two men and a woman, passed the money at three other stores across the city and police said they were not exactly the best fake bills they had seen.
“I mean they had repeated serial numbers so we knew they were obviously fake,” Savannah Police Chief Gary Will Jr. said. “The Feds are only going to print one serial number per bill.”
Marking every bill with a special pen usually keeps most counterfeit cash at bay. But there are other ways of spotting a fake including the color of ink and the material it’s printed on.
“If it feels like paper and not like the rag that money is made out of, that should be a big clue,” Chief Will said.
Although this federal crime is serious officers said it hurts these smalls stores more than anything.
“I just think it’s crazy,” Holmes said. “I mean why go around making fake money, you’re going to get caught.”
Savannah Police have released the following descriptions of their suspects:
Suspect #1 white male, dark hair and goatee. Wearing a brown coat, blue jeans and a camo shirt.
Suspect #2 white male, wearing a black cap and maroon hoodie.
Both were last seen in a red Dodge pickup with black rims.
Suspect #3 white female with brown curly hair and wearing a blue sweater. She was seen in a white, older model Buick 4-door.
