3 dead, 2 injured in early morning Bemis house fire
JACKSON, Tenn. — A house fire early Wednesday leaves three people dead and two others injured, according to the Jackson Fire Department.
The blaze occurred around 2:30 a.m. Wednesday at a house on B Street in Bemis.
One of the people who was killed was a student in the Jackson-Madison County School System, school officials confirmed Wednesday afternoon in a news release. They say another student was airlifted to Regional Medical Center in Memphis. Crisis counselors are available for students and staff.
Sources say the student who died was enrolled at Rose Hill Middle School.
Fire officials say a 17-year-old was transferred with severe burns to a Memphis hospital. A 32-year-old also is being treated for burns.
A 15-year-old and 11-year-old have been treated and released without serious injury.
Firefighters say they have not yet found any smoke detectors in the home and that they believe the fire started in the kitchen. The majority of damage appears to be to the rear of the home.
Neighbors say the house is a rental and that the family had not lived there for long.
Police have not released many details about the fire. Eyewitnesses say flames could be seen shooting from the roof of the home.
