JMCSS looks to hire bus drivers

JACKSON, Tenn. — The Jackson-Madison County School System wants to hire more bus drivers before the new school year.

busdriversTransportation Supervisor Grant Ward said right now he knows about five drivers will not be back next year. The district said substitutes will fill those full-time spots, but they still want to hire between five and seven drivers by the summer.

The school system said bus drivers are part time. They work a split shift, early morning and sometimes late in the afternoon. “There’s 95 counties in the state of Tennessee,” Ward said. “I don’t know of any transportation office that’s not looking for drivers right now.”

The district said bus drivers must pass a background check and get a commercial driver’s license.

The school system said it takes about two to three months to becomes a trained driver.
