West Tennessee woman pleads guilty in boys’ deaths
MEMPHIS, Tenn. (AP) – A West Tennessee woman has pleaded guilty in the deaths of two 11-year-old boys who were hit by her vehicle after it jumped a curb.
Shelby County District Attorney Amy Weirich’s office said in a news release on Friday that 27-year-old Sparkel Hastings of Memphis entered the plea to two counts of reckless vehicular homicide. The statement said Hastings was driving erratically when her vehicle left the roadway on Jan. 24, 2015 and hit Joshua McDowell and Darryl Howard, who were walking on a sidewalk.
The release says Hastings also pleaded guilty to driving with a suspended license and reckless aggravated assault stemming from injuries suffered by a passenger in her vehicle.
She will be sentenced on March 29.
