Memphis may consider fee for transportation authority
MEMPHIS, Tenn. (AP) – The CEO of the Memphis Area Transit Authority says the city is looking at a new fee to pay for the city’s and the authority’s transportation-related costs.
The Commercial Appeal reports MATA CEO Ron Garrison made the announcement Wednesday, a day after saying the transit authority was on the “verge of collapse.” He told the city council Tuesday that a fee could resolve some issues at MATA, which he says faces cuts because of a lack of funding for operations.
Public Works Director Robert Knecht says the fee is still in the beginning stages, but an ordinance could be presented to the city council in the upcoming months.
Garrison says he’ll ask the council to increase the city’s contribution to MATA next fiscal year by roughly $7 million to $30 million and add $5 million in capital funds.
