Students honor African American doctors during black history program
JACKSON, Tenn. — Students at North Parkway Middle School held their annual Black History Month program Wednesday.
This year, the focus of Councilman Ernest Brooks’ program was African American doctors. Students gave speeches about innovative black doctors including Dr. Ben Carson and also honored those practicing medicine in Jackson.
The program honored 20 doctors for their achievements and service to the community.
Program organizers say this program was important to show students their hard work in school will pay off.
“For them to see people who look like them and to hear part of their stories and to also learn the history of black medicine here in Jackson-Madison County,” Councilman Brooks said.
Brooks highlighted the life of the first black physician in Jackson, Dr. Miles Lynk, during his speech to students.
