Waveland pill mill operator sentenced in federal court

GULFPORT, Miss. (AP) – A 59-year-old Louisiana woman who headed up operations at a Waveland pain-management clinic has been sentenced to five years in prison and fined $5,000 for her role in the prescription drug-running operation.

The Sun Herald reports U.S. District Judge Sul Ozerden also ordered Peggy Laporte, of Metairie, to pay near 36,000 in restitution and to forfeit her interest in property and a home.

Laporte pleaded guilty in October to possession with intent to distribute a controlled substance outside the scope of a medical practice.

Federal agents arrested Laporte and two others during a May 13 raid at the Waveland clinic.
