Dam breach forces road closure in DeSoto County

HERNANDO, Miss. (AP) – DeSoto County authorities have closed a road near a dam breach, but one official said the problem doesn’t pose a significant threat to area residents.

The Commercial Appeal reports that closing a segment of Kelly Road north of the Delta Crest subdivision was a precautionary measure recommended by the Mississippi Department of Environmental Quality.

Roughly 50 homes are in the area where the dam breached near the Tunica County line, but officials said the property doesn’t face any immediate risk.

District 4 Supervisor Lee Caldwell described the potential threat as “low impact” and said it will cost an estimated $22,000 to fix the breach.

The dam is on a lake in the subdivision, which was developed in the 1960s.
