Union’s Caldwell, Risner and Campbell honored with GSC postseason awards

BIRMINGHAM, Ala. — Union University women’s basketball players Tiara Caldwell and Kelsey Risner were named to the 2016 Gulf South Conference All-Conference teams, while head coach Mark Campbell was named the GSC Women’s Basketball Coach of the Year for the second straight season.

Caldwell was a first team all-conference performer, while Risner was named second team all-conference.

Caldwell, a 6-foot-2 junior forward from Memphis, Tenn., leads Union with 14.6 points per game and is second with 6.8 rebounds per game.

She is shooting 58 percent from the field. She is sixth in the GSC in scoring, seventh in rebounding and first in field goal percentage.

Risner, a 5-foot-9 senior from Waynesboro, Tenn., is fourth on the Union team with 10.7 points per game, but had a team high 9.8 rebounds per game. She nearly averaged a double-double on the season. She passed the 1,000 point mark for her career earlier this season.

Risner leads Union with 82 made 3-pointers and is shooting 46 percent from long range. She ranks second in the GSC in rebounding, second in 3-point field goal percentage and first in 3-pointers made.

After claiming the GSC regular season crown for the second straight year and third in four seasons, Union will host No. 8 seeded West Georgia in the quarterfinals of the GSC Tournament Tuesday night at 6 p.m.
