Officials: City supplying more water that its being paid for
MAGNOLIA, Miss. (AP) – Magnolia officials say the town isn’t getting paid for the amount of water it supplies to customers.
The McComb Enterprise-Journal reports that the city pumped out more that 200 million gallons of water last year but only received payment for about 100 million gallons.
Mayor Anthony Witherspoon says part of the problem stems from malfunctioning meters. He says the city has found dead meters and is in the process of replacing, calibrating or re-calibrating them. Alderman Joe Cornacchione says there are at least 40 meters that don’t work.
Witherspoon says the city doesn’t want to raise water rates. He says replacing defunct meters will eventually bring in more money. He is recommending hiring additional clerks for water collections.
