Floodwaters cover roads, close schools in Carroll County
HUNTINGDON, Tenn. — Flooding forced schools in Carroll County to close early Thursday as water covered roads and flooded yards.
Heavy rain fell constantly Thursday in Huntingdon. “Too much water,” Justin Carroll, of Huntingdon, said. “Too much rain.”
A yard on Cox Street looked like a lake. Carroll lives next door. “Well, it kept coming down hill from the school, then it gathered up and just started going right across the road over there,” he said.
Buses picked up students at Huntingdon Primary School. Carroll County Schools dismissed classes around 9 a.m. “A lot of our back roads are flooded. Bridges are out,” Huntingdon Primary School Principal Alan Eubanks said.
School leaders want to make sure students are safe but said it is hard to predict the weather. “Probably in the middle of the night probably wasn’t as bad, but once the daylight came about, you know kids were already on the bus,” Eubanks said.
The Carroll County Emergency Management Agency said they spoke with the National Weather Service and expected to get another one to three inches of rain Thursday.
Signs warned drivers about potential flooding.
Water covered part of Buena Vista Road. Trucks took their chances and drove through it.
“These past couple days just been awful, just nasty,” Carroll said.
Carroll County EMA Director Janice Newman said Thursday afternoon they had at least five or six roads closed.
