Union County looking to round up outstanding fines
NEW ALBANY, Miss. (AP) – The Union County Board of Supervisors is considering contracting with an independent company to collect outstanding fines owed to the county.
The Northeast Mississippi Daily Journal reports the supervisors met last week to hear a proposal from Debra Sivira of American Municipal Services.
Previous boards have tried having outside companies collect old fines over the years but have tended to drop those companies due to poor results.
Sivira said her company, based in Texas, has a good record and typically collects from 20 to 25 percent of owed old fines – sometimes more.
Also, if the county is not happy with the service they can drop it after 30 days.
No total for outstanding fines owed the county was given but in past years the amount has been described as very large.
