Sen. Bob Corker visits Savannah; talks Brussels attacks, presidential race

SAVANNAH, Tenn. — U.S. Sen. Bob Corker, R-Tenn., stopped in Savannah on Tuesday to address a crowd at City Hall. Hardin County is one of 18 counties Corker said he plans to visit while at home from Washington, D.C.

CORKER“Want to hear from folks here about what’s on their mind,” Corker said.

The Republican from Chattanooga chairs the U.S. Senate Foreign Relations Committee and weighed in on Tuesday’s terrorist attacks in Brussels.

“Every country that I go to, and I’ve been to 70 now, the first meeting we have is about intelligence sharing because of this kind of thing,” Corker said.

Corker said it is going to take more close cooperation between governments to deal with ISIS appropriately. “The most important responsibility is for us to protect citizens here,” he said.

People in Savannah said some of their concerns include jobs and economic development. “We’re doing a lot to improve quality of life to attract our young folks back to Savannah instead of going to the big cities, and we want help from Washington,” Savannah Assistant City Manager C. Seth Sumner said.

One question Corker would not answer is who he supports for president. “I haven’t even told my wife who I voted for,” he said.

Corker did, however, voice his opinion on the election. “The American people are obviously very frustrated, in many cases angry, and I think you’re seeing that play out on both sides of the aisle,” he said.

Corker has stops scheduled Wednesday in Henry County and Carroll County.
