2 charged in Jackson police chase, juvenile in custody
JACKSON, Tenn. — Two of the three suspects accused of leading police on a chase through midtown Jackson faced a judge on Wednesday morning. Investigators said they were trying to serve an arrest warrant Tuesday when the suspects took off.
Sangria Baker Jr. and John Martin appeared Wednesday morning in Jackson City Court. They each face multiple counts including drug, firearm and evading arrest charges.
Police said they were trying to serve a warrant on a juvenile for attempted murder around 3:45 p.m. Tuesday on Stanfill Drive when Baker took off driving with the juvenile and Martin in the vehicle.
“Baker immediately shifting the vehicle in reverse and rammed Newbill’s police vehicle,” Judge Blake Anderson said in court.
Investigators followed them to West Forest Avenue where officers said they abandoned the vehicle. Police said they found Martin and Baker hiding under vehicles in a garage on Walnut Street and the juvenile on Campbell Street.
Officers said they found two loaded guns after frisking Martin and a third gun in a trash can nearby. Police said they also found drugs in Baker’s SUV.
Baker told the judge he was out on bond at the time. “He made a $100,000 bond,” Anderson said. “He’s obviously a flight risk.”
Court documents show Baker was arrested in early March, accused of pointing a machine gun at a man and robbing him. The prosecutor said they plan to revoke Baker’s pending bond.
The clerk’s office said the juvenile had a detention hearing scheduled for Wednesday. Baker is being held in lieu of a $500,000 bond and Martin is being held in lieu of a $300,000 bond.
