Leflore County to hire collection agency
GREENWOOD, Miss. (AP) – The Leflore County Board of Supervisors plans to hire a private collection agency to recover unpaid court fines and outstanding garbage collection fees.
The Greenwood Commonwealth reports the board Monday authorized its attorney, Joyce Chiles, to draw up an agreement with Carrollton, Texas-based American Municipal Services to collect the money.
Officials said the total owed in overdue garbage fees is unclear because the county needs to determine whether some unpaid fees are valid. Supervisor Sam Abraham speculated that unpaid Justice Court fines might be as high as $1 million, dating back decades, but couldn’t say how much of that would be collectible.
AMS, which adds 25 percent to what a person owes, last year collected $72,000 for Indianola and $65,000 for Greenville.
