Louisville students train on heroin antidote
LOUISVILLE, Ky. (AP) – A group of University of Louisville students left a panel discussion on opioid abuse armed with heroin overdose kits and the knowledge of how to use them.
The Courier-Journal reports the event was held this week at an off-campus apartment and business complex where 22-year-old student Dani Cogswell died of a heroin overdose in 2014.
Formerly the head of the university police force, Metro Councilman David James says he suggested the meeting after learning of a high concentration of heroin overdoses in the area last year.
James says school police recently received training on how to use the antidote drug naloxone.
Having received a naloxone kit, student Dominic Cinquina says he plans to carry it in his backpack in case he encounters someone who has overdosed.
