“I am actually a product of the Humboldt City School System. I attended this school in the 5th and 6th grade,” Sims said. “I was a student in this classroom.”

It was her experiences as a student that inspired her to become a teacher, and she says a good teacher is flexible.

“Nine times out of 10, things aren’t going exactly according to the plan, so you must be able to accommodate the learning styles.”

Sims said using unique teaching methods keeps them interested.

“We like to use music a lot. This week, we’ve been learning about the water cycle and we’ve been singing songs to the tune of ‘She’ll be Coming ‘Round the Mountain.'”

She has taught almost every elementary grade level but said third grade is probably her favorite.

“The kids are at a point where they’re changing,” she said. “They’re learning so much more. They’re becoming more independent thinkers, and it’s really a time that they can think on their own and make good decisions for the rest of their life.”

Sims will now be eligible for the statewide Tennessee Education Lottery Educator of the Month award. Starting in May, to vote for her or any of the other nominees, visit seehowitaddsup.com.
