Junior Rodeo

Boys and girls from kindergarten through eighth grade compete in Tennessee Junior Rodeo Association rodeos between August and May of each year with contestants from at least three states.

Boys can compete in steer bareback and steer bronc riding, breakaway roping, team roping, ribbon roping, chute dogging, goat tying, and bull riding. Girls compete in barrel racing, pole bending, breakaway roping, team roping, ribbon roping, and goat tying.

“Junior rodeo is for any kid who is interested in the sport of rodeo. Rodeos are a family affair, and all the adults really work with the kids to encourage them in the sport,” said Randy Prince, Tennessee Junior Rodeo Association board member.

Contestants accumulate points throughout the year and the top four junior high competitors in each event qualify for the Cinch National Finals which will be held in Lebanon, Tenn. Cinch National Finals will feature contestants from across the U.S. and Canada.

“These kids put their heart and soul into this sport, and although they might not be professionals just yet, they put on a mighty good show for spectators,” said Prince.
