Environmental groups oppose proposed dams near Pascagoula

JACKSON, Miss. (AP) – Environmental groups are calling on a federal agency to stop a potential dam-construction project near the Pascagoula River in southeastern Mississippi.
The Army Corps of Engineers is requiring an environmental impact study before approving a proposal by George County to build dams on two creeks that feed into the Pascagoula River. Officials say the project will help control the river’s water levels and store water to provide relief in case of drought.

The national environmental group American Rivers says the project would actually lose more water while damaging the river’s ecosystem. The group has put the Pascagoula on its list of the country’s 10 most endangered rivers and will release more details Tuesday. It joins the Sierra Club and other regional and local environmental groups in opposing the project.
