Settlement approved in corrections officer wage lawsuit
NASHVILLE, Tenn. (AP) – The Metro Council has approved a $2.1 million settlement to end a legal dispute about how corrections officers are paid.
The Tennessean reports the council approved the settlement Tuesday.
The settlement has two parts: $1.9 million because of the misinterpretation of the Metro pay plan, and $200,000 to pay officers who said they worked past their regular shifts.
More than 850 Davidson County Sheriff’s Office correction officers sued the Metro government for back wages dating back to 2006. The employees said they earned hourly wages, yet were being paid an annual salary divided by their hours worked, resulting in less than the hourly wage listed.
The city argued the employees were paid based on a salary also listed in the Metro’s pay plan.
A jury ruled in the correction officers’ favor in August.
