Lumberton stream named in honor of WWII veteran

LUMBERTON, Miss. (AP) – A stream in Lumberton has been named in honor of a World War II veteran who frequented the area for hunting and fishing.

WDAM-TV reports Dana Creek is named for Richard L. Dana, a lifelong Biloxi resident and Army veteran who died in 2009.

It flows a few miles from Forrest County through Pearl River County and into Red Creek. Some of the land surrounding the creek belongs to Dana’s daughter, Rebecca Dana-Fetterolf.

She petitioned the U.S. Board on Geographic Names to name the creek for her father.

The process took about 11 months.

On Thursday, members of the Dana family gathered to cut a ribbon and unveil the name at a bridge that crosses the creek on Hickory Grove Road.

Dana is buried at the Biloxi National Cemetery.
