Man charged with hitting, killing woman with car appears in court
JACKSON, Tenn. — A man accused of running over a woman with his car and killing her in January appeared Thursday in Jackson City Court.
Jeffrey Mason is charged with first-degree murder and tampering with evidence in the death of Kheirra Murphy, according to court documents.
On Thursday, Mason waived his right to a preliminary hearing. His case was bound over to the grand jury.
Officers say Murphy’s body was found just after 4 a.m. on Jan. 30 on the roadway in the 100 block of Boardwalk Cove.
Evidence indicated Murphy had been struck by a vehicle and dragged about 50 feet.
Investigators determined Murphy had left a nightclub located on North Parkway near the intersection of North Royal Street around 3 a.m. The club is about two miles from where her body was found.
Police say they were able to identify Mason as the person Murphy left the club with and that they recovered blood and hair evidence on his car.
