38 million Americans hit the road for holiday, according to AAA
GIBSON COUNTY, Tenn. — As the long holiday weekend comes to a close, many people are heading back home.
The Gibson County Sheriff’s Office said holidays bring an increase of impaired drivers and that they do what they can to prevent potentially fatal situations.
“In Gibson County, we have a definite increase in traffic flow on the holidays, Deputy Drew Norvell said. “We try to make sure that everyone that is out traveling has safe road conditions and anyone that shouldn’t be on the road, off.”
More than 38 million Americans traveled more than 50 miles for the holiday, according to AAA.
Authorities said with this kind of increase in traffic flow, drug trafficking escalates.
“Since travel season began, we have picked up a little bit on what we have been finding,” Deputy Norvell said. “We have had a couple of good busts recently. Our officers have been doing a lot of good work. All the shifts are really doing a stand-up job making a lot of stops and doing some preventive measures to stop narcotic flow in Gibson County.”
Deputies said if you are making your way home, remember to buckle up, stay off your cell phone and be aware of your surroundings.
