Man killed answering front door almost never left home

MAGNOLIA, Miss. (AP) – Relatives and friends say a man gunned down at his front door was friendly and loved children, but almost never left his home.

His girlfriend, Tanya Butler, tells the Enterprise-Journal that 34-year-old Zerrick Ward left the house only for haircuts. She estimates that he may have gone outside three days a year.

Cousin Lakeisha Dillon-Wallace says she ran errands for Ward and his 1-year-old son.

Magnolia police say someone shot Ward in the chest as he answered his door on the night of May 19.

Ward lived long enough to describe the attack, telling officers that a masked man knocked on his door and shot him as he stood in the doorway.

Police are still looking for a motive and have not identified any suspects.
