Forrest Co. residents speak out against annexation

HATTIESBURG, Miss. (AP) – Over the last several weeks, Lamar County officials have made clear their opposition to Hattiesburg’s proposed annexation into parts of Lamar and Forrest counties.

Now a handful of Forrest County residents and business owners have officially joined those ranks, speaking out against the move at Monday’s meeting of the Forrest County Board of Supervisors.

The Hattiesburg American reports Elizabeth Broome Gillentine, owner of Forrest Funeral Home, said one of her main worries is businesses leaving the county to avoid annexation.

The annexation was originally proposed at an April 19 meeting of the Hattiesburg City Council, when council members voted 4-0 to approve an ordinance that would allow officials to annex in three locations in Forrest and Lamar counties.
