Lee County circuit clerk proposes merging some precincts

TUPELO, Miss. (AP) – The Lee County circuit clerk says she wants to reduce the number of polling places to save money.

The Northeast Mississippi Daily Journal reports that Camille Roberts talked to supervisors about the proposed change Monday. They would have to approve it.

Roberts says Lee County has 38 precincts for roughly 46,000 voters. She wants to reduce that to 25 precincts.

She says DeSoto County has 39 precincts for almost 100,000 voters, and Harrison County has 58 precincts for almost 110,000 voters.

Lee County spent about $1,300 for poll workers at each precinct during the federal primaries this year.

Roberts also wants the county to buy newer voting machines, which could cost about $200,000. She says the current machines, which count both electronically and by paper, use 1992 technology.
