Authorities searching for hiker who jumped into lake

MORRISTOWN, Tenn. (AP) – Hamblen County emergency workers are searching for the body of a man who reportedly jumped into an eastern Tennessee reservoir and did not surface.

Hamblen County Sheriff Esco Jarnagin tells media outlets that a man in his early 20s was hiking with his girlfriend Monday afternoon at Panther Creek State Park when he jumped into Cherokee Lake from a bluff. He has not been seen since.

Jarnagin declined to identify the victim pending the conclusion of the incident.

Authorities say the search, which continued Tuesday, is situated in the same cove where a 23-year-old James “Brad” Campbell of Talbott drowned May 23.

The state park northeast of Jefferson City is a popular destination for swimming, fishing and horseback riding.
