Gulfport passes alcohol-filled ‘to-go cup’ ordinance
GULFPORT, Miss. (AP) – The Gulfport City Council has passed an ordinance allowing open containers of alcohol in a designated entertainment district after Louisiana Gov. Phil Bryant signed the “to-go cup” law last month.
The Sun Herald reports the new state law, which takes effect July 1, allows cities with downtown entertainment districts to set boundaries within which people would be allowed to carry open containers of alcohol.
The ordinance passed Tuesday by the Gulfport City Council limits go cups to 16 ounces and forbids glass containers. The city’s entertainment district covers the waterfront from just east of 18th Avenue to 36th Avenue, including the harbor, and runs north to the CSX railroad tracks in the downtown area.
Ordinances also are being drafted in Bay St. Louis, Long Beach, Biloxi and Ocean Springs.
