Kids enjoy summer day camps across Madison County

JACKSON, Tenn. — Across West Tennessee, school is out and it’s time for summer fun. Kids day camps have started across the county, and there’s still room for your child to join.

“We enjoy being in nature, camping and things like that,” Madison County Parks and Recreation Program Assistant Sharon Cole said. “So just give them a little bit of an option of things to do.”

At First Cumberland Church, Cub Scout Day Camp started Monday. The theme for this week’s camp is CSI — Cub Scout Investigators. The Jackson Police K-9 unit came to show the boys how it’s done.

The STAR Center has a specialized camp for children with autism this week. Campers not only got to play music but also learned how to write a letter.

Jackson Parks and Recreation Department is having summer day camp at the T.R. White Sportsplex and also at Westwood. Department leaders say the camp filled up on the first day of registration. All of these summer programs still have openings for kids who may want to join in the fun.

“This camp we think is always good. Of course the boys learn a lot in school, but this is a more fun way for them to learn,” Boy Scouts Central District Executive Kyle Moore said.

“Bring them out here, get them a little sun, a little education because we do academics too,” Cole said.

In Gibson County, the Trenton YMCA that just reopened this May is also having a summer day camp. According to camp staff, spots are still open and camp fees are income based.
