cooling shelterBROWNSVILLE, Tenn.–Following the hottest day of 2016, the city of Brownsville has opened an emergency cooling shelter for residents.

Located in the W.O.W building at 1113 E. Main Street the building will be open from 8 a.m. to 8 p.m. Friday and Saturday.

The shelter has sitting room for 100 residents at a time. Staff with the Parks and Recreation department said folding chairs could be removed to fit additional people if need be.

“If people want to come in and just sit, we’re not going to run them off during our work hours. Especially when it’s this hot outside,” assistant administrator with parks and rec. Melba Mitchell said.

Mitchell said residents taking advantage of the cooling shelter are encouraged to bring snacks, games and gadgets to enjoy while they catch a break from the heat.
