Ways to Beat the Heat
JACKSON, Tenn.-With close to record-breaking temperatures, many people are taking cover to avoid the scorching heat.
What about people who have to be outside for work? The main thing is to make sure you have fluids in your system. Staying hydrated and taking breaks are some things EMS supervisor Jason Moon stresses.
“If you have to be outside and you’re working, by all means take more breaks than you normally would,” Moon said. “Make sure you hydrate yourself during the day.”
When it comes to children, he said it is important to remind them to rest because they won’t think about it.
Some parents try to beat the heat by beating the sun.
“I just make sure they drink plenty of water,” Jackson mother Kamieka Clark said, “If I take my kids out, we go out early in the morning.”
While some people think less is more with clothing, more clothing can actually save you.
“It’s better to keep something on because it helps keep moisture on your body.” Moon said. “The sweat gets trapped in your clothes and helps to cool you down.”
EMS crews can receive multiple calls during the day involving heat.
If you feel yourself getting overheated, the best thing is to let someone know, get hydrated and in an emergency call 9-1-1.
Health experts say above all, staying hydrated throughout the day and night is essential as we approach the hottest times of the year.
