Former Madison County judge sentenced in assault case

JACKSON, Miss. (AP) – A former Madison County judge has been sentenced in an assault case.

Attorney General Jim Hood, in a news release, said former Justice Court Judge Bill Weisenberger appeared Wednesday before Senior Status Judge L. Breland Hilburn in Madison County Circuit Court where he pleaded guilty to misdemeanor simple assault.

The 58-year-old Weisenberger was accused of striking a mentally disabled African-American man at a Canton flea market in May 2014 and using a racial slur.

Hilburn sentenced Weisenberger to six months in custody with six months suspended, followed by three months of supervised probation and three months of unsupervised probation. He also was ordered to pay a $500 fine and serve 100 hours of community service.

He agreed to never seek public office or work in law enforcement again.
