Greenfield mayor, aldermen clash over hiring of new police chief
GREENFIELD, Tenn. — The city of Greenfield’s mayor and board of aldermen went head-to-head over hiring a new police chief during a Tuesday night meeting. Their chief recently retired.
Greenfield Mayor Cindy McAdams proposed the hiring of a new chief, a candidate from out of town. His name has not been released.
However, members of the board of aldermen spoke out against her choice. They argued it would be better to hire from within the department.
“A new person coming in is going to have to learn small town ways. This guy is from out of state,” argued Alderman Bobby Morris.
Proponents of promoting from within also said that would allow them to eliminate a current position within the department and save the city about $50,000.
Mayor McAdams conceded to the board but said they’ll have to start from scratch. “We’ll have to advertise, get MTASS involved again and go from there.”
The mayor said she’s unsure how long the search process will take. Two lieutenants will continue to run the department until a new chief is chosen.
