Upgrades planned for Pride of Mississippi practice area

HATTIESBURG, Miss. (AP) – The University of Southern Mississippi marching band is getting major upgrades to its practice facilities, including a new band tower and synthetic turf.

The director of the Pride of Mississippi will soon have a great vantage point to view the band from the new 34-foot, tubular steel tower with two observation decks. The 1,600-square-foot facility also will include space to store instruments and equipment for the Department of Recreational Sports.

Catherine Rand, director of bands, tells The Hattiesburg American construction of the tower is underway and should be completed by August, weather permitting.

Phase two – which will include installation of the turf – will be bid in the coming months. The work will not begin until after the 2016 football season.
