Third annual Firefighters Freedom Festival is a success
MADISON COUNTY, Tenn. — Thousands of West Tennesseans enjoyed the largest Fourth of July festival in the Hub City.
The rain didn’t stop people from coming out Monday night to the third annual Firefighters Freedom Festival.
Residents said they’re glad to get together and celebrate.
The event took place at the McKellar-Sipes Regional Airport and had over 20 food vendors, kids rides and live music — but the main attraction of the day was the fireworks.
People said they had been waiting all day for the main show.
“Me personally, I ‘m looking forward to the fireworks,” carnival worker Nick Webman said. “I heard this is supposed to be a big show out for the fireworks.”
While the fireworks had people excited, they said they are also remembering those who gave their lives.
“Celebrating being with family,” festival attendee Mary Sorrell said. “My dad was a military man, celebrating that they served our country past and present.”
“We had a lot of soldiers, a lot of people who gave their lives so that we can celebrate this day,” festival-goer Loretta Lee said.
The festival started because firefighters wanted a safe place for families to have fun and watch the fireworks.
“It’s safe and fun out here, and it’s a safe place for the kids to be,” Lee said. “I think it keeps people off the streets and keeps drunk drivers off the streets.”
Attendees also had the chance to write letters to soldiers, get their face painted and even visit a petting zoo with all types of animals.
