JEA prepares for energy demand as temps rise

JACKSON, Tenn. — A heat advisory in West Tennessee may mean it takes extra power to keep cool. Jackson Energy Authority said usage usually peaks in the summer.

jeaJEA Vice President of Distribution Monte Cooper said they can handle the demand and the system is built to take on more load than they have ever seen.

“All of our circuits are in place,” Cooper said. “All of our substations are online. We’re in great shape to serve the load.”

Cooper said right now customers can use energy as they please, but there are several things people can do to save money on utility bills. “Closing the blinds to keep the sun from radiating that heat into your house, checking that your filters are clean,” Cooper said.

JEA recommends setting the thermostat at 78 during the summer and cooking outside.

JEA monitors substations, the current, voltages and the system load from inside a control room around the clock. If something goes wrong, Cooper said they can get help from contractors and other utilities.

The Salvation Army in Jackson said it is collecting fans for the elderly and women with children who do not have air conditioning. So far this year they said they have only collected about 10 fans. If you would like to donate, contact the Salvation Army at 731-422-1271.
