Officials meet consensus over zoo parking ahead of vote
MEMPHIS, Tenn. (AP) – Officials have reached a consensus over zoo parking at Overton Park in Memphis ahead of a city council vote.
The Commercial Appeal reports the Memphis Zoo and the Overton Park Conservancy agreed Monday on an amended version of a plan to end zoo parking on the park’s green space.
The plan amends the solution proposed by Mayor Jim Strickland to add more zoo parking, create a new park entrance and save the magnolias between the greensward and zoo parking.
The zoo and conservancy had been in mediation over the zoo’s use of the greensward for parking on peak attendance days.
When the mediation failed, Mayor Jim Strickland proposed his plan, which drew criticism from the zoo.
The city council is scheduled to vote on the greensward plan Tuesday afternoon.
