Shiloh National Military Park unveils exhibit to celebrate namesake vessel

SHILOH, Tenn. — Timothy Arnold is guiding visitors around Shiloh National Military Park this summer, talking about battles past and vessels present.

USS Shiloh“That reconciliation message that the veterans taught us, I love being able to share that to the people,” said Arnold, who works at the park as a tour guide.

A replica of one vessel was unveiled this week, the U.S.S. Shiloh, commissioned in 1992 but named after the battle that took place there in 1862.

“There are photos and things these guys took during their operations, both work and play,” said Brian Azevedo, who helped create the exhibit. “We’ve got different aspects from the crew with some of their more tactical operations.”

Organizers are hoping to honor the men and women still operating the ship. They’re asking visitors to write to them while the exhibit is on display.

“So that these guys can see that, especially in this area, that they have our support and we’re thinking about them, and we’re proud of what they’re doing for us,” Azevedo said.

Park officials say before you head outside to the battlefield to stay hydrated and bring a healthy lunch with you. The park is open all week with demonstrations and tours starting at 8 o’clock each morning.

The U.S.S. Shiloh exhibit will be on display until Labor Day.
